Avril McIntyre Steps Down as our Trustee

Avril McIntyre has stepped down from the trustee board of Barking & Dagenham Giving. A long-standing charity leader in the borough, Avril dedicated eight years to BD Giving’s board and played a pivotal role in shaping the organisation.

Trustees are responsible for the governance of a charity. They oversee decisions about how the charity is run and ensure it adheres to its charitable purpose. As a trustee, Avril helped to guide BD Giving’s vision and contributed to our achievements, such as the launch of the UK’s first community-led investment policy.

With a rich history of leadership within the borough, Avril has not only helped establish BD Giving but has also been integral in fostering community-driven initiatives throughout the borough. Avril continues in her role as CEO of Community Resources.

Last month, Avril also stepped back from her role in the BD_Collective as it transitions to being run by the community through a Community Benefit Society (CBS). This transition further highlights Avril’s belief in the importance of community ownership and empowerment. As the BD_Collective evolves, it’s a natural moment for Avril to also step down from BD Giving, which will host the Collective during its early development.

Reflecting on her departure, Avril remarked on the value of letting go in leadership, acknowledging that stepping back allows space for new voices, ideas, and energy to emerge. Her leadership philosophy is one that encourages power sharing and ensures that diverse perspectives are involved in decision-making. In stepping down, Avril paves the way for fresh leadership to further BD Giving’s success.

Avril's passion for our borough and unwavering dedication have set a high bar for community service. While her role is changing, the foundation she helped build will continue to guide our mission. We're immensely grateful for Avril's pivotal role in bringing BD Giving to life, and I’m excited about future opportunities to collaborate with her.

Finding new trustees for BD Giving

BD Giving will soon begin recruiting new trustees to join its board. We are seeking individuals with expertise in communications, business strategy and development, digital and AI, and human resources.

These new appointments will play a key role in governing the organisation’s exciting work on community-led decision making to strengthen the borough’s social infrastructure and assets.
