The GROW Story

Created by local people, for local entrepreneurs. The GROW Fund is all about reinvesting in Barking and Dagenham’s success.

The idea came from a group of residents who chose to develop GROW so local entrepreneurs can create both a commercial and a social impact in the borough.

Everyone that applied in 2023 was based in Barking & Dagenham, 60% of applications were from Black-led ventures, and 70% from women-led enterprises.

Since 2023 18 local businesses have taken part, with three taking on social investment so far. Listen to Carole from The Boathouse Barking CIC’s journey on the 9 Miles East Podcast.

Case-studies from GROW

Danielle Everitt, CEO & Founder, Final Checks Hair & Make Up Academy

GROW 2025 participant

Final Checks Academy based in Dagenham Film Studios, empowers aspiring makeup and hair artists with expert training, real industry experience, and the confidence to succeed professionally. GROW has changed the way Danielle thinks about herself, her team and her business. Danielle’s ambition is to take on social investment so they can offer more courses, train up more local talent and create more jobs in the borough.

“We’re halfway through the incredible GROW Workshops, and what a transformative journey it’s been for Final Checks Academy, myself, and our entire team! The insights, inspiration, and support have truly elevated my vision and strengthened my mission to grow Final Checks… We’re energised and ready to take Final Checks to new heights!”

Carole Pluckrose, CEO & Founder, The Boathouse Studios

GROW 2023 participant, £75,000 investment.

The Boathouse Studios is an arts and events venue on the river Roding in Barking. The GROW programme enabled Carole to boost marketing, providing a stronger income stream for The Boathouse. The investment has contributed to upgraded facilities and a more strategic approach and building increased brand recognition.

“The investment from BD Giving honestly felt like a partnership—an adult-to-adult relationship, rather than the more parental dynamic you often experience with funders. Their deep understanding of our community brought meaningful questions and challenges that pushed us to grow, while also showing a real interest in our success.
Unlike the arm’s-length approach of many funders, working with BD Giving has been refreshingly collaborative, personal, and grounded in our shared commitment to the borough. That combination of support, accountability, and shared purpose has been both encouraging and confidence-building.”
Sarah Kasule, Founder, Ultimate Counselling

GROW 2023 participant, £26,500 investment.

Ultimate Counselling provides mental health and outreach services for refugees, asylum seekers, and immigrants across East London. The investment enabled Sarah to hire a Service Development Officer to explore new income streams, freeing her up to launch a paid-for counselling service to ensure the longer-term sustainability of her business.

“The investment will strengthen our sustainability, deepen our impact and enable us to reach more destitute and vulnerable immigrants in our community. We are sincerely grateful.”

Christina Lartey, Founder Think Pieces

GROW 2025 participant

Think Pieces helps primary school children develop financial confidence through interactive workshops, games and digital learning tools.

With BD Giving’s GROW Fund, Christina has been able to accelerate the development of her business, expand her network and bring a new financial literacy app to life.

For Christina, one of the biggest surprises about GROW was the sense of community among founders. Learning alongside others who were building businesses in the borough created a powerful support network.

“The best part has been meeting other founders and learning from people who are at different stages of their journey.”

Thanks to funding from Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, BD Giving will run GROW until 2027.
