Update on the Community Space in Gascoigne Estate

What Residents Said They Want

Back in April, the community space in the Gascoigne estate opened up so residents could pop in, check it out, and share ideas about what it could become. The response was brilliant with lots  of people getting involved and sharing their thoughts.

Here’s what happened:

  • 40 people drew up their own ideas for the space

  • 90 people said they want to work with us on the project

  • We handed out 325 smoothies!

It was fantastic to see so much energy and creativity-thanks to everyone who came along!

Lots of young people and their parents came to see what was happening.

Lots of Ideas

Since then, we’ve taken a look at all the feedback and ideas. Some common themes came up again and again. These are things the community clearly cares about. You’ll now see posters in the windows of the Sole Walk space that highlight these ideas. If you’re walking past, have a look!

Some of the themes included:

  • A multi-purpose community space where residents can come together for various activities and events
  • A sports and play hub for both adults and children
  • A retail space such as a community café or store that residents can easily access
  • An inclusive space that welcomes everyone and serves the community, such as a faith-based or educational setting
  • A safe and supportive space for young people
  • An educational space for non-formal or lifelong learning opportunities

What’s Next & How to Get Involved

We will now have two community gatherings to talk about what happens next. These are happening on Thursday 17 July, One at 2pm, another at 6pm (both about an hour long) at the community space in Sole Walk in the Gascoigne Estate.

These sessions are a chance for everyone to:

  • Chat about the suggestions we already received
  • Share more thoughts and ideas
  • Find a way forward together so the community stays in the lead
  • Get to know the two organisations behind the project: BD Giving and B&D Reside

If you’d like to join one of the meetings, you can sign up here or if you know someone else who’d be interested? Feel free to pass it on.

Can’t make it but still want to be part of things? Drop us an email on either rukiyah@bdgiving.org.uk or paul.nettleton@bdreside.co.uk  and we’ll keep you in the loop.
