What is your relationship to Barking and Dagenham?

I lived in the area, Barking, Upney and Becontree, for 14 years and I still have strong links to the area. While living in the borough I was actively involved in neighbourhood groups, the safer neighbourhood police team and sports events, which gave me a good insight into the local community, local initiatives and the common challenges faced by people living in the area.

What challenges do you think you might face in this role?

Historically Barking and Dagenham had relatively low levels of community engagement. Finding effective ways to establish links, build productive relationships and trust is not straightforward. Having said that, BD Giving already made good strides in building those networks and I look forward to supporting it on this journey.

What are your hopes for the borough?

I believe Barking and Dagenham has a lot of unrealised potential. Its location, transport links and natural assets make it an attractive destination. I’d like to see the borough shake off negative perceptions, so people want to live, run their businesses, socialise with their friends and family here.

How do you think community can achieve these goals?

Community is an essential link – residents understand the needs within the borough and how to best connect the opportunities created by BD Giving with those who would benefit from the support it offers. An engaged community is a driving force for change.

I would like to see the borough shake off the negative perceptions and transform to become a place where people want to come to live, run their businesses, socialise with their friends and family.
